How to Create a Watermark Using Photoshop

There are many different methods of creating a watermark using the computer if you are worried about your online content being copied or stolen. Here is a quick tutorial showing you how to make your images and online content safe from copy cats!

I am using the program ‘photoshop’ depending on your version some steps might be slightly different.

Text Watermarking

Firstly you must choose the colour you want your water to mark to show as, we suggest using white. Then you must click the ‘T’ icon to create the text for your watermark.

You must write whatever you want your watermark to say in the textbox and choose its size and position. Then you must make the text less opaque, to do this you must go to Layer > layer Style > Blending Options.

Then using the blending options drag the opacity down to where you want it, usually 50% does the trick.

The water mark will look like this...

Symbol Watermarking

You can also use symbols as watermarks in a similar way to above.

First open your image and press new layer, Layer > New > Layer.

Next go to the shape tool and choose a custom shape.

You can now choose the copyright symbol to place over the image.

You can now experiment with blending modes to make the watermark look more professional. This includes adding soft light and bevels and embosses. Layer > Layer Style>Blending Options.

On the blending mode choose soft light and make sure the bevel and emboss tick box is marked.

And here is what the finished watermarked image will look like...

You can also experiement with embossing your image using the colour black instead of white, after drawing your shape go to Filter > Stylize > Emboss.

When Photoshop asks you to rasterize the shape say okay.

Then go back to the layer style menu and select hard light,

Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options

The finished watermarked image will look like this:

Creating an Action and Batch Watermark

Using this method you can add a watermark to an entire batch of images to save you the time of individual watermarking. Firstly put all the images you want to watermark into one folder.
Firstly go to File > Automate > Batch.

From there you can choose the folder containing the images that you wish to watermark, what action you want to use and where you want to save the images.

Then choose the file and create a watermark to add to every single image.
